Inspired by the Four Diagnostic Methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine: Premium TCM Wellness Tourism Routes in the Wumeng Mountains

Drawing inspiration from the four diagnostic methods of traditional Chinese medicine — observation, listening and smelling, inquiry, and palpation— these four themed routes connect the natural ecological beauty of the Wumeng Mountains with TCM wellness resources and distinctive medicinal cuisine experiences.

Route One: "Observe - Eyes on Green, Mind at Ease"

Starting from Chengdu, this route passes through Muchuan in Leshan, Cuiping and Changning in Yibin, Daozhen in Zunyi, Nanchuan in Chongqing, and Shizhu in Chongqing. Embracing the essence of "observation diagnosis" and the TCM wisdom that "the liver opens into the eyes" (which simply means that the eyes are the external manifestations of the liver's health), it draws upon vast expanses of greenery to nourish the liver and brighten the eyes while calming the spirit.

The journey links lush sanctuaries such as the Muchuan Bamboo Sea, Cuiping Mountain Park, the Shunan Bamboo Sea, Daozhen Yunqi Lake International Tourism and Wellness Resort, Jinfo Mountain, and Dafengbao Scenic Area, forming a visually therapeutic retreat. Along the way, visitors can immerse themselves in rolling waves of green bamboo, try their hand at traditional intangible cultural heritage bamboo weaving, and savor wholesome local delicacies and fine drinks, including Yibin Burning Noodles, bamboo fungus, bamboo delicacies, bamboo bird's nest fungus, mountain bamboo shoots, ash tofu fruit, codonopsis chicken, the Gelao "San Yao Tai" banquet, Wuliangye liquor, and Xianlin fruit wine. The experience restores both body and mind to a state of natural serenity.

Route Two: "Inhale - Mists of Scent, Depths of Peace"

Starting from Chongqing, this route travels through Cuiping in Yibin, Yuexi and Xide in Liangshan, Xichang, and Miyi in Panzhihua. Drawing upon the concept of "smelling diagnosis," it harnesses the fragrance of grasses and trees to invigorate yang energy and comfort the spirit with the scent of nature.

Stops include Xide Hot Springs, Qionghai Lake in Xichang, and the Sun Valley Wellness Zone in Miyi. Visitors can relax in natural "oxygen bars," experience aromatherapy to relieve stress, awaken the spleen and dispel stagnation with the fragrance of fresh fruits, and unwind with mellow grain aromas in Yibin's easygoing atmosphere. Seasonal fruit picking, including agate cherries, Shine Muscat grapes, loquats, blueberries, and apples, offers a sensory journey where natural scents nurture body and soul.

Route Three: "Inquire - Tracing Healing Herbs, Exploring Craft and Care"

Beginning in Guiyang, Guizhou, this route passes through Bijie, Gulin in Luzhou, Xingwen and Cuiping in Yibin, Chishui and Renhuai in Zunyi. Echoing the deeper meaning of "inquiry diagnosis," it journeys through time to uncover the mysteries of Chinese herbal medicine, reflecting on the essence of life and wellness amid landscapes and cultural heritage.

The route explores the Baili Azalea Scenic Area, Huangjing Old Forest Tourist Resort, Xingwen Stone Sea, Lizhuang Ancient Town, the Chishui River Valley, and Moutai Town Scenic Area. Visitors can discover Yi ethnic wellness wisdom, experience the brewing craftsmanship of Gulin Langjiu, make traditional Miao medicinal sachets, witness Li-style bone-setting techniques, study ancient architecture and wartime culture in historic towns, and explore the Yang-supporting academic tradition of Wu Peihengin Yunnan. Culinary highlights include the Bo Wang Mountain medicinal banquet, Moutai liquor, Chishui sun-dried vinegar, and Dendrobium duck. In the interplay of mountains and culture, travelers find peace of mind through a deeper understanding of life's natural flow.

Route Four: "Palpate - Savor Delicacies, Nourish Body and Soul"

Starting from Kunming, Yunnan, this route passes through Qujing, Xingyi, Anshun, Zhaotong, Junlian and Cuiping in Yibin. Inspired by the tactile insight of "palpation diagnosis," it encourages touching nature and nourishing the five organs through food, sensing the life rhythms of heaven and earth.

The journey includes Dianchi Lake National Scenic Area, Huize Sea Grass Mountain, Xingren Caoxitang Longevity Wellness Park, Anshun Jiulongshan International Forest Wellness Tourism Resort, the China Gastrodia Museum, the Wumeng Mountain TCM Culture Museum, Hejiangmen in Yibin, Cuiping's Guanying Street, and the Wuliangye 501 Liquor Cultural Sanctuary. Visitors can sample medicinal hot pot soups, gastrodia and ham chicken, Qishe tea, golden thorn pear, and other wellness delicacies, cultivating physical and mental well-being through immersive experience.
