A Cup of Tea from Majestic Mountains and Clear Waters — Savoring the Rock Aroma and Floral Fragrance of Wuyi Tea
Published: December 12, 2025
Editor: Cao Xuewen

The beauty of Wuyi lies in its "Nine-bend River, thirty-six marvelous peaks, seventy-two caves, and ninety-nine cliffs". And among all the wonders and charms that gather in this landscape, none embodies it more completely than the Rock Tea.

Mount Wuyi is the birthplace of Rock Tea. The production of Wuyi Rock Tea can be traced back to the Han Dynasty. Over generations of development, the refined craft of making Rock Tea took shape in the early Qing Dynasty. The distinctive "rock bone and flowery flavor" of Wuyi Rock Tea (Dahongpao) comes from the mountain's unique ecological environment, climate conditions, and exquisite traditional craftsmanship. Its traditional production process consists of ten tightly interlinked steps, each indispensable.

Mount Wuyi is also the origin of both black tea and oolong tea. The tea customs that developed alongside the art of Wuyi Rock Tea production, such as "Calling the Mountain", tea-tasting competitions, and tea ceremonies, carry rich local character, appealing to both refined tastes and everyday appreciation, with deep popular roots.

Wuyi Rock Tea is sweet and mellow with an elegant, lingering aroma. It lacks the bitterness of green tea and the astringency of black tea, keeps well over time, and becomes clearer in fragrance and richer in flavor the longer it is stored. In 2006, the traditional production techniques of Wuyi Rock Tea (Dahongpao) were included in the first representative list of national intangible cultural heritage.
