Visit Zigong and Experience an Everlasting World of Lantern Lights
Published: December 4, 2025
Editor: WangYing

The Zigong Lantern Festival originated during the Tang and Song dynasties and was inscribed on the representative list of State-level intangible cultural heritage items in 2008. This traditional folk celebration combines lantern craftsmanship, traditional stories, and modern technology, creating a festival culture with unique characteristics.

The Zigong Lantern Festival is most famous for its stunning lantern displays during the Chinese New Year period, which include a variety of lantern types such as craft lanterns, pedestal lanterns, and group lanterns. Among these, group lanterns stand out as the most distinctive. They are often inspired by traditional folk culture, classical literature, and mythological tales, and are large in scale, composed of many parts, and designed for coordinated movement. The designs are ingenious, the craftsmanship meticulous, and the materials diverse — porcelain tableware, glass bottles, silkworm cocoons, fine bamboo strips, tie-dye, silk, and more can all be used as raw materials for lantern making.
