Steaming flower buns for the Chinese New Year is a time-honored custom in northern China, symbolizing the wish for thriving fortunes and a more prosperous life. Shanxi Province is the heart of flower bun making, and Wenxi flower buns are the most renowned of all.

Recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, Wenxi flower buns rose to popularity during the Ming and Qing dynasties and have a history of more than 1,000 years. They are both edible and ornamental. The production process is highly meticulous, involving nine handcrafted steps: water mixing, flour sifting, yeast making, dough kneading, molding, dough proofing, steaming, dyeing, and ornamental flour flower inlaying, all done by hand.

In terms of design, Wenxi flower buns are vivid and festive, featuring motifs such as flowers and zodiac animals. Their hues are vibrant yet elegant. Varieties include tiger-shaped buns and pomegranate-shaped buns, with elaborate and lifelike details. During Chinese New Year festivities, people adorn them with red dates and other embellishments, symbolizing a prosperous and thriving life.
