Nestled in Bortala Mongolian autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, Sayram Lake is Xinjiang's highest and largest alpine lake. Like a sapphire cradled by mountains, the lake sits at the foot of the Borohoro Mountain. Moisture from the Atlantic travels more than 6,000 kilometers to reach this remote basin, where it falls as precipitation—hence the evocative name "the Last Tear of the Atlantic."
The 90-kilometer circuit around the lake is a paradise for road-trippers and cyclists, linking dramatic lakeside vistas with immersive cultural encounters. Beyond the scenery, visitors can explore the nomadic heritage of the Kazakh people and sample local specialties, notably pelyad and other cold-water fish. A visit to Sayram Lake is essential for anyone traveling through Xinjiang.

Must-visit sites
South Gate Tourist Center: Don't miss the iconic stone monument engraved with "Sayram Lake"—the quintessential photo spot, offering panoramic views that frame the distant Guozigou Bridge against the tranquil lake.
Dianjiang Platform: Traditionally regarded as the site where Genghis Khan rallied his troops during his westward campaigns. From this vantage, visitors can take in the lake's wide U-shaped expanse.
Songshutou: A scenic peninsula where pristine forest meets calm lake waters—the area's only spruce-covered headland. It provides cool summer retreats and becomes a frost-laden wonderland in winter.
Kele Yongzhu (Bubbling Springs): The lake's primary source, where underground springs surge to the surface and create rhythmic ripples that resemble gently boiling water
Moon Bay: A slender, crescent-shaped beach that arcs into the lake. In summer it invites barefoot wading; in winter it reveals dramatic icefalls and intricate ice patterns, and it's the premier spot for sunset photography.
West Sea Grassland: In summer, wildflowers carpet the terrain among traditional Kazakh yurts. Travelers can go horseback riding or photograph snow-capped peaks rising above floral meadows.
