Located at the mouth of the Chiu-lung (Jiulong) River in Xiamen, Fujian province, Kulangsu (Gulangyu) is a 1.88‑square‑kilometer island. With its pleasant climate and a harmonious blend of natural scenery and cultural heritage, the island attracts millions of visitors each year. In 2017, "Kulangsu, a Historic International Settlement" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

More than a historic international settlement or a renowned tourist destination, Kulangsu is a vibrant living community. The island comprises the Gulangyu subdistrict, which includes the Longtou and Neicuo communities, and is home to approximately 12,000 permanent residents.
