The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is located at No. 1375 Panda Avenue, Chenghua District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It lies about 10 km from the city center (Tianfu Square), 30 km from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, and 50 km from Chengdu Tianfu International Airport. Renowned worldwide, the Base serves as a leading center for ex-situ conservation, scientific research and breeding, popular science education, and cultural tourism. As a flagship “Ecological Demonstration Project for Giant Panda Ex-situ Conservation”, it is celebrated for protecting and breeding giant pandas, red pandas, and other rare wildlife species unique to China.

Over the past three decades, the Panda Base has achieved major breakthroughs through innovative research, solving key challenges in captive feeding and management, reproduction and cub-rearing, disease prevention, and genetic diversity conservation. Today, it maintains the world’s largest ex-situ population of artificially bred giant pandas, as well as the largest captive population of red pandas.

Designed to simulate the giant panda’s natural habitat, the Base includes nursery houses, panda enclosures, research laboratories, panda hospitals, and several “panda villas” scattered across forested hillsides. The Base has twice received the highest environmental honor of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), “Global 500 Roll of Honour”, and has welcomed hundreds of thousands of dignitaries and distinguished guests from the UN and around the world.

In Dujiangyan, the Chengdu Field Research Center for Giant Pandas (Panda Valley) offers another unique experience. With lush bamboo groves, winding streams, birdsong, and a mild climate, it is an ideal environment where more than ten giant pandas undergo adaptive training for potential release into the wild.
