How could a Han-dynasty "feather-light robe" be so thin that you can read a newspaper through ten layers?

Answer: The plain gauze robe unearthed from Tomb No.1 at Mawangdui weighs only 49 grams and has 75% light transmittance. Even when folded ten times over a newspaper, the print beneath remains visible. This owes to its unique material: silk spun by the three-molt silkworm of the Han dynasty, whose threads are even finer than those produced by modern silkworms.
