Attire of the Huian Women in Fujian
Published: December 12, 2025
Editor: Cao Xuewen

The attire of the Huian women in Huian County, QuanzhouCity, Fujian Province is a distinctive form of Han Chinese women's clothing. It blends elements of Baiyue culture, Central Plains culture and maritime culture. Over a thousand years of evolution and inheritance, it has developed defining features: unusual silhouettes, unique ornamentation, harmonious colors, and beautifully vivid patterns.

The most iconic characteristic of this attireis the "short jacket revealing the midriff", typically paired with a yellow bamboo hat, floral headscarf, short jacket, wide-legged trousers, and silver waist chain. The local saying "feudalistic head, democratic belly, thrifty jacket, wasteful trousers" captures the essence of each component. The "feudalistic head" refers to the yellow bamboo hat, worn together with a headscarf to cover the entire head, shielding against sea wind and sun while carrying traces of traditional aesthetics. The "democratic belly" is the highlight: the cropped jacket reaches only the waist, revealing a slender midriff that is both neat and practical for work, breaking away from the constraints of traditional clothing styles. The "thrifty jacket" reflects the jacket's minimal fabric use and compact, body-fitting cut—simple, clean, and functional with no excess decoration. The "wasteful trousers" refer to the generously cut trousers, flowing and spacious, allowing ease of movement both in the fields and along the coast, and adding a distinctive sense of grace.

The bamboo hat is the most recognizable element of this attire, its primary color is bright, pure yellow. The headscarves are also highly distinctive: each one is a square (about 66 cm), typically featuring patterns such as white flowers on a blue or green background. The waist accessories come in two types—either woven from colorful plastic strips (about 7-9 cm wide), or crafted from silver. The trousers are usually black, a steady and versatile base that pairs well with various fabrics and adornments.

This attire resulted from the interplay between regional culture and practical wisdom. It combines utilitarian value with artistic charm and stands as one of the most iconic symbols of Minnan (southern Fujian) culture.
